TEIGNMOUTH is all lit up for Christmas.

Traders and the council have made a special effort this year to brighten up the town in the midst of economic gloom.

The crowds turned out to watch entertainer Capt Jack Sparrow perform the big switch on at the Triangle, and it also coincided with the start of the jazz festival.

The Triangle was packed with more than 400 people, including many in town for the fest, and were kept entertained by the Trinity School Swing Band, and refreshed with complimentary mulled wine and mince pies, courtesy of Teignmouth Traders’ Association, as they waited for the bright lights to shine.

The ceremony was preceded by a procession of 70 children from two primary schools, carrying homemade illuminated lanterns, through the town streets from the TAAG centre. The lanterns were sponsored by The Helen Foundation.

The choir from St Michael’s Church sang carols, and the mayor, Cllr David Cox, and the deputy mayor, Cllr James McMurray, thanked the traders for putting on such a glittering display.

Iain Palmer, from the traders’ association, said it had been ‘a brilliant evening’.

‘There are over 60 Christmas trees on shop premises all around the town and most of the streets are lit up.

‘The town looks very attractive and we hope that it will encourage more people to do a lot of their shopping locally this year,’ he said.

Capt Sparrow will be entertaining around the town on Saturdays December 3, 10 and 17.
